The hit tune “Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds” which was featured on the Beatles’ 1967 record Sgt Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band will never be the same again.

Lucy Vodden, the woman who motivated John Lennon and Paul McCartney to write the song in the first place, passed away last Tuesday after a long battle with lupus. She was 46.

Lennon’s eldest son Julian says the tune was inspired by a portrait he drew of his then-classmate, Lucy O’Donnell, who grew up to become Lucy Vodden.

Julian showed the pictured to his father and explained “It’s Lucy in the sky with diamonds.”

The campaign director of the St Thomas Lupus Trust – the organization which supported Vodden during her illness – said that “everyone at the Louise Coote Lupus Unit was dreadfully shocked by the death of Lucy” and that “she was a great supporter of ours and a real fighter.” (Daily Mail)
